Making landfall 25 miles south of Corpus Christi with some 16-foot surges, The Great Storm of 1919 hit the city with vengeance. Fighting back, the city began clean-up and recovery efforts immediately, coming together to rebuild - and rethink - the community. Corpus Christi witnessed a decade of growth that included the creation of the Port Commission and true deep-water port, the dredging of a ship channel through the Bay, a Chamber of Commerce, the construction of the seawall downtown and the reconstruction of Spohn Hospital at its present location on Shoreline.
